Boalt Hall Hosts Talk by Author Lani Guinier
On March 18, Harvard law professor and author Lani Guinier gave a talk titled "Transforming Democracy with Cross-Racial Coalitions." Guinier shared her vision of a social justice movement that would transform the nature of democracy in America. She also discussed the power of building grass-roots coalitions between races. The lecture began at 6:30 p.m. in Booth Auditorium and was followed by a book signing.

Guinier first came to the public's attention in 1993 when President Clinton nominated her to head the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice. Her nomination drew a great deal of controversy and her name was withdrawn without a confirmation hearing. She is the first black woman nominated for this position. Guinier is the author of The Miner's Canary and Who's Qualified?

The talk was co-sponsored by Boalt Hall's Center for Social Justice and the Commonwealth Club of California.
