Students Present Project at International AIDS Conference
Students and faculty involved in the AIDS Lanka project, a collaborative effort between three Boalt clinics, are among the presenters at the XIV International AIDS Conference in Barcelona, Spain.
The Boalt delegation is presenting information about the AIDS Lanka project, which draws on the expertise of the East Bay Community Law Center, Samuelson Law, Technology and Public Policy Clinic, and the International Human Rights Law Clinic. Created in October 2000, AIDS Lanka assists the AIDS Coalition, a nongovernmental organization in Sri Lanka, in advocating for increased treatment access for HIV-positive Sri Lankans.
Clinic Director Deirdre K. Mulligan and Nicole Ozer '03 from the Samuelson Clinic and Karla Galvez '03 from the International Human Rights Law Clinic are attending the conference to present the project, which was selected from a pool of 10,000 submissions from 145 countries. The International AIDS Conference is bringing together more than 15,000 participants from around the world.
Last April, members of the AIDS Lanka project provided the Sri Lankan government with a legal memorandum that suggests methods to improve access to HIV medications. So far, the memorandum has been well received by Sri Lanka and a copy has also been sent to the World Bank.
