USING LAWCAT AND PATHFINDER/GLADIS TO FIND BOOKS AND PERIODICALS

Lawcat is the online catalog for the Law Library's collection. It includes Boalt holdings only. It is the best source of information for what is in our collection and the best search tool with which to find it.

Pathfinder/Gladis is the online catalog for the holdings of MOST of the other libraries on the UCB campus. However the Law Library's collection is NOT on Pathfinder.

Lawcat and Pathfinder are web based catalogs navigated via clickable links. You can connect to either catalog from home. There are links to both catalogs on the Law Library's homepage. Each online catalog is searched by selecting from a short menu of search options. Additionally each has advanced search features, sort, display, save and email features and each system allows you to view your patron record and renew items online.

We will be using Lawcat and Pathfinder as tools for bibliographic verification and to locate known items for cite checking assignments rather than as research tools. We won't be describing all search features and options available in either catalog, just the ones that will be most useful when cite checking.

PATHFINDER

Return to Lawcat's main menu page and click on the link to Pathfinder

Pathfinder is the web-based catalog for most of the holdings of the UC Berkeley libraries. It began its life as Gladis, an online, telnet catalog. Not all Gladis functions have migrated to the web yet, Pathfinder still connects you to Gladis to view your patron record ("inventory" function) or to renew items online.

Pathfinder is easy to use. Like Lawcat it has keyword and Boolean search features, clickable links to authors, titles and subjects, a variety of display options and allows you to sort, save and email items to your email account.

Pathfinder has 2 search interfaces - Quick Search and Full Feature Search. Since we are using Pathfinder as a cite checking tool and not a research tool we will be looking at Quick Search. Like Lawcat Quick Search gives you a short menu of search options. Pathfinder provides you with lots of help screens. You can navigate Pathfinder using either its buttons or your browser's buttons.

Click on Quick Search at the left of the screen

  • TITLE KEYWORD(S) SEARCH
This is the default search selection in Pathfinder
Type: smoked tobacco in search box
No need to use Boolean connectors in Quick Search, Pathfinder assumes an "and" between words.
2 results - Click on 2, Click on Availability button to show location and whether item is checked out

  • PERSONAL AUTHOR PHRASE SEARCH
Click on SEARCH button at the top of the screen
Type: goodwin, doris in search box

    Click on MODIFY link

Click on Lyndon Johnson and the American Dream
Click on Availability button - 4 copies, 3 available at Moffit
Click on the Return button, click on Save and then on E-Mail/Display Saved to email record to your email account

  • PERIODICAL SEARCH
We are looking for an article in vol. 3 of The American Foreign Service Journal
Type: American Foreign Service Journal in the search box
    Select TITLE PHRASE
    1 result
Click on Availability button - Main Library has volumes 1-11 (1924-1934) in storage at NRLF
(NRLF is the Northern Regional Library Facility in Richmond. The Main Library pages materials from there on a daily basis.)
