Print Balance

Each student is allowed 1250 free pages of printing (non-color) for the academic year. Any printing over the 1250 page limit will cost $0.10 per side. Double-sided printing costs $0.16 per double-sided page. Color printing costs $0.75 per page. In the lab, print software keeps an account of your printing and gives you a balance after every print job. You can also check your balance by logging on to any of the Print Release Stations in the lab or in the copy room. If that number is in parentheses, that amount is what you owe for printing more than your annual allotment.

Periodic invoices are emailed to students if they have exceeded their print limit. Payments for outstanding balances can be made via checks made payable to UC Regents (you also need to put your student identification number somewhere on the check) in room M130. If you do not pay your printing bill in a timely fashion, your account may be disabled. Questions should be directed to Thomas Lee (tlee@law.berkeley.edu).

If you experience any problems while printing in the labs, consult a lab tech. You should think carefully before printing, as you will be charged for all print jobs. Pay particular attention to printing from Lexis and Westlaw. Both of these online services have their own standalone printers in the labs and you should route your Lexis and Westlaw print jobs to these printers. Any Lexis or Westlaw print jobs routed to the lab's own network printers will be charged against your account.

If your document is ruined in some way by the printer or computer (printer jam, toner has run out, etc.), you may get the ruined pages credited back to your account. Simply present the document to the lab tech, explain the problem and fill out a “Printing Credit Form” . Once submitted, the request will be considered and processed and the dollar amount will be added back to your print balance. Please note that this may not happen immediately. If you have a particularly large request, or feel that your request was not processed, please see Thomas Lee in M130C for assistance. Refunds will not be considered for non-computer/printer-related errors. Any printing done remotely from your laptop to the networked printers will be charged against your allowed 1250 free pages. You will be notified of the cost of the print job before you submit the job.

Do I have to pay to print?

As a student at Boalt you will receive 1250 pages free for the academic year (two semesters + summer). Many students use all of their credited pages in the first semester, and start accruing a print balance at the same rate of 10 cents for black-and-white print-outs, 16 cents for each double-sided page, and 75 cents for color.

How do I know what my print balance is?

After you have logged into your lab account, print software keeps an account of your printing and gives you a balance after every print job. You can also check your balance by logging on to any of the Print Release Stations in the lab or in the copy room. If that number is in parentheses, that amount is what you owe.

What happens when I have a negative print balance?

When you go over your 1250 pages, you will start to accrue a print tab. You will still be able to print as usual, but your print balance will appear in parentheses. During the semester, the lab will notify you of outstanding negative print balances.

How do I pay my print balance?

Print balances must be paid in full and in the form of a check or money order. The lab staff are currently not equipped to collect cash or credit cards, and there is currently no way to pay your balance online. Checks should be made out to UC Regents, and you need to include your student identification number on the check (for reference purposes).

Can I pay with a credit card?

No, we currently are not equipped to accept credit cards.

What if I have graduated and am no longer in town to pay my balance in person?

If you have left the area and have an unsettled bill with the lab, you can mail a check to the lab. Send to:
