Students are allowed to connect their laptops to the school network (LAN) through a wired (ethernet cable) connection, provided they have registered their laptop. After a laptop has been registered, it can be connected to the ports in certain North Addition carrels by the windows.

Your laptop is identified and authorized according to its ethernet adapter "Physical Address," or MAC address, and its "Host name." These pieces of information can be found in the following ways:

Windows Vista/XP:

Go to the Start Menu and click Run. Type "cmd" and click OK. When the command window opens, type in "ipconfig /all" and press Enter. Copy down the Physical Address under Local Area Connection and the Host Name under IP Configuration.

Mac OS X:

Click on the apple in the top left of your top bar. Click on "System Preferences". Click on "Network". In the "Show" drop down menu choose "Built-In Ethernet". Make sure the "TCP/IP" tab is selected. Copy down the "Ethernet Address" in the lower left of the box.

Note: if you have previously registered your laptop and now have a new one, or if you have not connected via cable in over six months, please email studentcomputing@law.berkeley.edu for assistance.
Also note: it is not necessary to register your laptop to use AirBears (wireless). Registration is only required for wired connections using ethernet network cables.

Once you have the ethernet adapter's physical address, you are ready to fill out this form. Please note: an address beginning with '44-45' is NOT the correct address. This is for a PPP adaptor. Your address should start with '00' or '08'. After you have submitted the form, you should be ready to connect by the end of the following business day.
