MATTHEW DAUBE:

At first, I didn’t wish to speak. David’s influence, perhaps. Language as a laughing mirror, beautiful and inadequate. Words came. Thoughts, beautiful and inadequate. Two words. Mind and spirit. Joined as one word in German, as Geist. Geist is unique and universal, like the human soul. Soul. Vast, cavernous, usually abandoned or forgotten. David never forgot. He knew the depths. David knew the depths in himself. David knew the depths in us. He reminded us of the roots of our being, forever changing the roots of our being. David was and will be Geist, unique and universal, German and Jew, ancient and new born, mind and spirit, himself and us. David Daube.
