Using the VPN
Remote access to journal and clinic data on Boalt servers is accomplished through the VPN (Virtual Private Network). Follow these steps to set up your computer to use the VPN (Macintosh instructions are here):
Users experiencing difficulty with the VPN software should email studentcomputing@law.berkeley.edu.
Installing the VPN client
Note: If you downloaded the VPN package from the page previous to 8/2/05, you will need to uninstall that version and download and install this new version. This will not affect any other software on your machine. To uninstall the previous version, click on Start → Control Panel → Add Remove Programs → VPN Client; and click on 'Change/Remove'. Follow the on-screen instructions. You will be prompted to reboot your computer when this has been completed. Please continue on with the installation instructions
(If you are using Microsoft Vista, follow these instructions instead.)
- Download the Boalt VPN installer to your desktop.

- Double-click it, and accept the license agreement.
- Accept the defaults by clicking next. The installation process may take a few minutes.
- Click Finish and allow the computer to be restarted.
You will need administrator privileges on your computer to install the Cisco VPN software.
Connecting to Boalt through the VPN
(If you are using Microsoft Vista, follow these instructions instead.)
- Launch VPN Client from the Cisco VPN folder in the Programs menu. (Start → Programs → Cisco Systems VPN Client → VPN Client)

Installing and connecting to the VPN for Vista users

- Accept the license agreement and defaults by clicking OK or Next. The installation process may take a few minutes.
- Click Finish and allow the computer to be restarted.
- Download this configuration file (right-click/save).
- Launch the Cisco VPN client and click on the Import button. Select the UCB-LAW.pcf and import it.
- Select the UCB-LAW connection entry and click Connect.
- When the login window pops up, enter your CalNet ID and passphrase.
- You'll know everything worked properly when you see the yellow lock icon next to the UCB-LAW entry.
Connecting to files and printers.
Mapping a drive:
- From the Start menu, right click on "My Computer" and select "Map Network Drive"

- Choose a drive letter for your network folder:

Faculty and staff:
Groups, choose drive letter G: and type \\zeb.law.berkeley.edu\Groups\ in the folder text box.
Users, choose drive letter M: and type \\zeb.law.berkeley.edu\users\FRIENDLY NAME (e.g. msmith) in the folder text box.
Journals, choose drive letter J: and type \\groucho.law.berkeley.edu\Groups\Student Journals\ in the folder text box.
Clinicals, choose drive letter K: and type \\milbarge.law.berkeley.edu\Clinicals\ in the folder text box.
Access restrictions still apply, of course. You will still need to authenticate:
- Click to connect using a different user name and enter your CalNet ID and passphrase. Prefix your friendly name or CalNet ID to @campus.berkeley.edu (e.g. 12345678@campus.berkeley.edu or username@campus.berkeley.edu).

After connecting, you can open and save files to the i: drive. You can find it by browsing My Computer.
Connecting to a Printer
To connect to a network printer, follow these steps. This example uses the "Remote" printer, located in the Westlaw lab. Print jobs sent to this printer are held until you physically come to the print release station next to the printer, and enter your CalNet ID and passphrase.
- Select "Printers and Faxes" from the Start menu.
- On the left side menu, click "Add a Printer"

- Indicate that you want to connect to a "Network Printer". Click Next.
- Select "Connect to this Printer" and enter \\groucho.law.berkeley.edu\Remote in the textbox.

Click Next.
- You probably do not want to make that printer the default for your computer, so select No. Then click Next and you are finished.
This printer is now available to you from any application you need to print from.
