FAQs about joining CLR

Class of 2006 members please note:

Current members of the class of 2006 who wish to join CLR by submitting a publishable comment should click here for some specific FAQs and instructions.

What is the California Law Review (CLR)?

CLR is an academic journal that publishes legal scholarship produced by academics, practitioners, and students. We are a completely student run organization and our offices can be found on the 5th Floor of Simon Hall.

What do CLR members do?

2L members are primarily responsible for editing the articles, comments, and book reviews published by CLR, and for source collecting and cite-checking. In addition to these requirements, every 2L member completes either a casenote or a comment that is then considered for publication in the Review.

What are the 2L summer requirements for members of CLR?

CLR is one of the few journals at Boalt that publishes six issues a year, including one during the summer. In order to keep CLR on its publishing schedule, members are required to commit 40 hours during the summer after their second year. To meet this requirement, members have the option of working an entire work week (Monday-Friday) or some combination of two work days and two weekend days. CLR makes an effort to accommodate requests for specific dates, and employers are generally understanding when they are given notice by members.

Can prospective 1L members gain access to CLR 1L Outlines?

Yes, CLR provides all 1L students with access to our archive of outlines. Go to the following link to find what you need: 1L Outlines

How does one become a member of CLR?

Entry to CLR is by invitation after a write-on competition or publication of a student comment. For information, contact the Projects Department.

How can I learn more about CLR and the write-on competition?

In the weeks following spring break, we hold a series of informational meetings and workshops designed to tell you a little bit more about CLR and the write-on competition, and to help prepare you for the competition itself. You may also contact CLR's Projects Department for further information.

What if I plan to be away from Boalt next year?

Why in the world would you want to go anywhere other than Boalt for a whole year? Seriously, you can check out our policy for joint degree students, JSP students and others who might be spending a year away from Boalt.

What about transfer students?

Every year Boalt generally accepts approximately 30 transfer students who spent their first year studying at other law schools. Since the admissions office does not determine the acceptance of transfer students until late in the summer, there is no way for them to compete in the ordinary write-on competition. However, to give transfer students the chance to join CLR, a second mini-write-on competition is held shortly after the beginning of the fall semester. If you are a potential transfer student and would like more information, please see the Contact Us page.

What if I have a disability that affects my ability to participate in the write-on?

For answers to any questions concerning our policy on disabilities please contact the Coordinator of Student Programs, Holly Parrish. (This is to preserve your anonymity.)
