BERC @ Boalt

BERC @ Boalt is the law school branch of the Berkeley Energy & Resources Collaborative a student-led organization which aims to connect and educate the UC Berkeley energy and resources community. The group acts as a bridge between the University's many schools, programs, and labs, and forges connections with the larger cleantech and energy cluster growing in the Bay Area and beyond.

BERC @ Boalt helps to inform law students about current legal practice and advances in the fields of energy, climate and clean technologies through curriculum development, an expanding alumni and professional network, the promotion of events and discussions centered on green issues, and creation of a Career Guide for Energy, Climate and CleanTech Law.

The group also connects members to industry professionals and graduate students in other UC Berkeley departments to facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration, research and project development. Find out how you can get involved!

Berkeley Technology Law Journal

The Berkeley Technology Law Journal
(“BTLJ”) is a student-run publication of the Boalt Hall School of Law, University of California at Berkeley. BTLJ began as the High Technology Law Journal, publishing its first issue in Spring 1986. The Journal covers emerging issues of law in the areas of intellectual property and biotechnology; BTLJ strives to keep judges, policymakers, practitioners and the academic community abreast of the dynamic field of technology law.

The Journal’s membership of approximately 165 students publishes three issues of scholarly work each year, as well as the Annual Review of Law and Technology. The Annual Review is a distinctive issue of the Journal published in collaboration with the Berkeley Center for Law and Technology and is dedicated to student-written casenotes discussing the most important recent developments in intellectual property, antitrust, First Amendment, telecommunications, biotechnology and business law. In addition, the Journal co-sponsors an annual symposium on a salient area of technology law.

In addition to the Journal’s primary mission of publishing quality articles on the relationship between technology and the law, BTLJ has organized conferences in conjunction with the Berkeley Center for Law & Technology on a variety of topics. For each conference, BTLJ publishes a symposium issue, in which leading academics have published cutting edge scholarship on the issues raised at the conference.

boalt.org

boalt.org is the voice of the students at Boalt Hall School of Law and not that of the faculty or administration. The web content is student-run and student-developed.

As an organization, boalt.org works to secure additional computing resources for Boalt Hall students. Improved and smart instructional technology is our goal and boalt.org's executive board lobbies and advises the law school administration to this end.

As a Web page, boalt.org seeks to become the resource for student publishing at Boalt Hall. To this end, we include links to Boalt Hall student organizations and journals in their various spots on the Web.

Our content is student-run and student-developed. The boalt.org Webmaster is appointed by the Boalt Hall Students Association and is charged with administering the site and setting applicable publishing guidelines.

Healthcare and Biotech Law Society

The Boalt Healthcare and Biotech Law Society is a group of law students who are interested in examining and analyzing the intersection between law, society, policy, and science.

Our mission is to stimulate the intellectual and professional development of Boalt students interested in health and/or biotech law. We provide a forum for students with a broad range of interests.

Patent Law Society
(Boalt Hall )

The Boalt Hall Patent Law Society is a new student organization. We hope to function as a focus group for students interested in practicing patent law, provide a forum for students to have in-depth discussions regarding patent law, engage patent law practitioners to share their experiences with the students, and provide opportunities for students to interact, network and exchange ideas.

Samueslon Law, Technology & Public Policy Clinic

The Samuelson Law, Technology and Public Policy Clinic at Boalt Hall was the first clinic in the country to provide law students with the opportunity to represent the public interest in cases and matters on the cutting-edge of high technology law.

Since January 2001, students participating in the Clinic have worked with leading lawyers in nonprofit organizations, government, private practice, and academia to represent clients on a broad range of legal matters including Internet free speech and online and wireless privacy.

Students have represented clients before the Federal Communications Commission on issues of privacy and wireless communication technology, participated in the writing of amicus curiae briefs in the Yahoo! case in support of free speech, and collaboratively developed an online resource center to assist the public in dealing with a variety of Internet legal issues, including copyright, trademark, and patent infringement.

In addition to having the opportunity to put their high technology skills to use for the benefit of real clients, students in the Clinic participate in a seminar that joins the theory and practice of law. In the seminar, students learn and discuss underlying legal principles, explore the practice and theory of public interest representation, and “workshop” their cases.

Students participating in the Clinic play an integral role in defining how civil liberties and other public values will be protected in an increasingly high-tech world.

Sports and Entertainment Law Society

The mission of Boalt’s Sports and Entertainment Law Society (SELS) is to educate the Boalt Hall community about legal opportunities and issues in the entertainment and sports industries. SELS also strives to facilitate opportunities for students to network not only with each other, but also with legal professionals in these industries. As a relatively new and expanding organization, new members are particularly welcome with their ideas, efforts and enthusiasm. SELS plans to sponsor many events in the 2003-2004 academic year. These events include guest lectures and social events, such as tailgates at the Oakland Coliseum and movie nights. Additionally, SELS seeks to develop its strength as a resource for students to connect with alumni and seek employment opportunities in the sports and entertainment industries.

Universities Allied for Essential Medicines

Universities Allied for Essential Medicines (UAEM) is an initiative linking members of universities in the US, the UK, and Canada who are concerned that the research, patenting and licensing policies of academic institutions are restricting access to medicines in poor countries. In cooperation with top experts in international medicine access and technology transfer, UAEM has created a unique contract that universities can adopt to increase access to medical innovations in developing countries while maintaining or even improving drug development.

UAEM chapters are forming at universities across the country to advocate for policy change. Here at Berkeley, students from law, medicine, business and public health have started a chapter and are looking for other interested students to join.
