The National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences, known for the Grammy Awards, announces its annual Entertainment Law Initiative (ELI). The ELI program encourages dialogue on important legal issues facing today's music industry. Students are challenged to research such an issue and propose a resolution.

ELI consists of two elements: a legal writing contest, co-sponsored by the ABA Forum on the Entertainment and Sports Industries, and a high-profile luncheon held during Grammy week.

The first-place winner will receive $5,000, and four second-place winners will receive $1,500 each. All winners will receive a gold-level Grammy Awards ticket, round-trip airfare to the Grammy Awards ceremony, hotel accommodations, an invitation to MusiCares Person of the Year Dinner, and an invitation to the Grammy Nominees Celebration.

This competition is open to all full-time law students with the exception of L.L.M. students and editors and staff members of the Richmond Journal of Law & Technology. Entries may be submitted either electronically, as an e-mail attachment to jolt@richmond.edu (Attn: Writing Competition Submission), or by regular mail.

Topics may include patents, copyrights, trademarks, trade secrets, biotechnology, telecommunications, technology licensing, venture capital, antitrust, e-commerce, computer law, cyberspace law, privacy, and any other current topic in high technology law.

The TPRC is an annual forum for dialogue among scholars and decision-makers from the public and private sectors engaged in communication and information policy.  The purpose of the conference is to acquaint policymakers with the best of recent research and to familiarize researchers with the knowledge needs of policymakers and industry.

To be presented on October 15, 2004 at the 2003 Annual Meeting in Washington, DC, the Watson Award of $2,000 is awarded to the author of best article on a subject relating to the protection of intellectual property written or published between August 1, 2003 and June 30, 2004. Reasonable expenses will be reimbursed to the author of the winning paper to travel to Washington, DC to receive the Watson Award.

Acceptable topics are as broad as a candidate's initiative, creativity, and vision. Representative examples include, but are not limited to:

• Focus on metrics or other measurements of intellectual asset management performance
• Protecting intellectual property rights to maximize competitive opportunities
• Extracting untapped value from intellectual property
• Auditing patents to determine whether they should be enforced, licensed, donated, or terminated
• Identifying prospective IP licensees

Entries must be directed to any of the traditional subject areas of intellectual property, i.e., patents, trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets, unfair trade practices and antitrust. The winner will receive a cash award of $1,000.00 and a plaque at the NYIPLA Annual Meeting and Dinner on May 27, 2004, in New York City . The runner-up will receive a cash award of $500.00 and a plaque at the Annual Meeting and Dinner. The winning paper will be considered for publication by the NYIPLA. The winner and runner-up should plan to attend the Annual Meeting and Dinner.

FIRST PRIZE: $5,000 and an all-expense paid trip for the student winner and his/her professor to attend the Intellectual Property Section's Annual Spring Meeting and award presentation ceremony. The first prize paper will also be published as an article in New Matter , the Section's journal, which is circulated to intellectual property lawyers statewide.

To be eligible for consideration, the paper must relate to intellectual property law (e.g., copyright, trademark, patent, trade secret, privacy, right of publicity).

Sponsored by the American Intellectual Property Law Education Foundation, this scholarship addresses the need to increase the number of the minority intellectual property attorneys and to bring these attorneys to the attention of firms and corporations as candidates for employment. The $10,000 Law Scholarship will be awarded to minority students developing a career in intellectual property law or holding a past or present, full or part-time position in an area related to intellectual property law. Applicants must also have a demonstrated financial need and outstanding academic performance in the undergraduate level and law school level (if applicable).
