The East Bay Community Law Center (EBCLC) is the community-based component of Boalt Hall’s Clinical Program. EBCLC was founded by Boalt students in 1988 to provide legal services to low-income and underrepresented members of the community near the law school. Under the supervision of the center’s attorneys and Boalt Hall lecturers, students provide direct legal services to local low-income residents in areas of benefits advocacy, estate planning, family law issues, debt relief, and immigration. Students also address legal problems encountered by people with HIV/AIDS.
By working at EBCLC, students gain valuable experience in lawyering skills and legal advocacy. They interview clients; research the relevant law; negotiate with opposing parties; and, where appropriate, prepare for and carry out the trial of cases in judicial or administrative settings. The EBCLC staff teaches the required companion seminar, Community Law Practice at the East Bay Community Law Center. In addition, students can serve on the EBCLC student steering committee, a committee that assists in the coordination of the Law Student Outreach Project.
Applying to the EBCLC
The application for students interested in enrolling for the clinic for the Fall '08 semester is now available. You may pick up a hard copy from the Registrar's Office or download the application form (see below) and print it out. Please return the completed form to the Center for Clinical Education at 396 Simon Hall by April 15, 2008.
