The Visiting Scholars Program is one of CSLS's most important and fruitful activities, enriching current scholarship and stimulating new research ideas and ventures. In recent years, CSLS has welcomed up to 25 visiting scholars each year from the U.S. and abroad in a range of disciplines, including law, political science, sociology, criminology, history, and communications.
CSLS's Visiting Scholars Program has expanded in recent years, with increasing applications for semester or yearlong stays in the "unique interdisciplinary and international research environment," in the words of one 2004-05 visitor. In one recent year, for example (2004-2005), CSLS welcomed 26 visiting scholars from the U.S. (12), Europe (7) and Asia (7) in fields including law, political science, history, sociology, criminology, social psychology and public administration.
In addition to scholars from academic institutions, the Center is pleased to host annually a practicing defense lawyer or public interest lawyer from Japan, selected under an agreement between CSLS and the Japanese Federation of Bar Associations. The current Japanese FBA fellow is Mika Matsumoto.
