05/13/2009: SUMMER CONSTRUCTION BEGINS MAY 17
Starting Sunday, May 17 there will be a lot of construction going on and this will affect how you can enter the building and also how you cross back and forth, east to west. On the WEST side of the building all entrances will either be closed off or be difficult to reach. On the EAST side the law library entrance will be closed – you will need to enter the library on the WEST side (near Dean’s Office).
The following entrances will be open and accessible as usual:
• Bancroft / Simon (near Goldberg)—all hours library is open
• East garage—weekday business hours
• Door between back of JSP and Boalt Hall (north east side of the building)—weekday business hours only
• Door from parking lot near Archeology building--enter by bear sculpture—all hours library is open
West Side Closures
• Southwest entrance and staircase (near classroom 100)--CLOSED UNTIL AUGUST 13:
• Northwest staircase (near classroom 110) CLOSED UNTIL AUGUST 13 Note: The door will be open but you must enter from and exit to the north east parking lot. You will not be able to go down the stairs to College Plaza.
• West terrace entrance by classrooms 12 & 14--CLOSED UNTIL JUNE 8
• Classrooms 100, 105 and 107--the hallway will be blocked off with a temporary wall--CLOSED UNTIL AUGUST 13
• The bike racks in front of Wurster will also be unavailable over the summer.
These West Side Closures are going to make coming and going to the Telegraph shuttle stop (on Bancroft by the news stands) a bit of a bother until June 8, when the West Terrace door opens again. There just was no viable alternative, so allow yourself a bit more time to get to the stop--the shuttle departs on the quarter hour.
The East entrance into the library will also be closed off starting around May 19 and continuing until August 13. This means that if, e.g. you are coming in the Bancroft / Simon entrance or from Zeb and you want to come to the library or to the dean's office you'll need to take the elevator or stairs down to the 1st floor, cross over to the west end, and then take the elevator or stairs back up to the 2nd floor. There will be no access from the library to restrooms on the second floor—you’ll need to use first floor restrooms. New exiting maps have been posted in the building and we will also be posting directional signs.
01/16/2009: Noise Alert for Monday, January 19
There will be jackhammering in the south courtyard on Monday, January 19. As Monday is a university holiday classes will not be disrupted, but it will be noisy in the library's main reading room and computer labs. There will be sound protection available for use in the library. The North Addition reading rooms should not be significantly affected.
01/06/2009: Progress Report
The excavation of both the South Courtyard and the West Terrace is well under way. Work commences around 7:00 AM weekdays and continues until about 4:00 PM each day. Because of a delay at the beginning of the project the contractors are having to work weekends as well. Work begins around 9:00 AM on weekends.
There was an error in the Fall / Winter 2008 edition of the Transcript says that noisy work will be conducted between Midnight and 8:00 AM. This was the schedule for internal renovaiton work (so as not to disrupt classes), not the South Couryard and West Terrace work.
When classes start on Monday, January 12 the following entrance should be available:
Simon Hall entrance from Bancroft Way (wheelchair accessible) (This is the entrance to use during nights and weekends to gain access to the law library)
West Terrace North entrance (wheelchair accessible)
South entrance by room 100 (not wheelchair accessible)
North entrance by room 110 (wheelchair accessible from parking lot)
North entrance near Bear sculpture (wheelchair accessible from parking lot)
East entrance between Piedmont /CSLS buildling and North Addition (wheelchair accessible)
12/05/2008: Construction Noise Begins on Monday, December 8
Beginning Monday, December 8 construction crews will be demolishing the benches attached to the law building and will be breaking up and removing the hard surfaces in the courtyard. Demolition will involve the use of a hoe ram, a large hydraullic jackhammering tool. There will be loud noise in the parts of the building that face the courtyard and also the West Terrace. This includes classrooms 12 & 14, 107, 111, 115, 121-124, Booth Auditorium, the law library Main Reading Room, Lobby and Computer Labs, Administrative Offices on the west side of the south courtyard and various other pockets of space within the law school. This work is expected to last until Friday, January 9. Right now, there is no work scheduled on weekends, and there will not be work on Dec. 25 and January 1.
Access to the library's North Addition and East Reading Rooms will be limited to Boalt Law students and scholars only.
11/03/08: Power Washing of Building
Beginning Monday, November 3, our South Addition contractor, Hunt Construction, will begin power washing the existing law building. Although many folks have commented that it is strange to clean a building before a major construction project, the reason we're doing it now is that once the new building is in it will be impossible to bring in the kind of equipment needed to clean 57 years worth of grime off the walls. So Hunt decided to do the heavy duty cleaning now and to do a light cleaning when the new building is completed.
The work is expected to take about three to four weeks to complete. Hunt will take care of closing and taping off windows.
10/31/08-11/2/08: West Basement Floor Work
Our apologies for such short notice, but we just learned that the contractor has to do work on the floors in the corridor where lockers are located. The work will begin on Friday afternoon shortly after noon and will continue through Sunday night. Access to this area will be restricted from Sat 5:00 until Sunday at noon.
There may be some odors, from a water based product they use to control moisture in the terrazo tiie. This should dissipate quickly.
Again, we are so sorry for the late notice.
Monday, October 13: Construction Begins, Entering and Exiting Changes
The South Addition project will begin in earnest this coming Monday, October 13, when contractors begin installing the construction fence. Here's the schedule as we currently know it (subject to change at the whim of the construction deities):
- Monday & Tuesday contractors install construction fence
- Wednesday: contractors lock off the fence and seal off doors near Booth and 120, and across from 100 and 105.
- The North West door into the West Basement (near rooms 12 & 14 and the lockers) (wheelchair accessible)
- The South door of Simon off of Bancroft (next to Goldberg Room) (wheelchair accessible)-- this will become the night and weekend entrance of the building and will be open whenever the Law Library is open.
- The South facing door next to classroom 100 (not wheelchair accessible)
- The North facing door next to classroom 110 (wheelchair accessible to and from parking lot area only).
Construction Details
Once the construction fence is up the contractors will begin preparation for digging. Within the next two weeks they will finish installing AC in 121-124 and will seal off those windows to reduce noise. They plan to begin excavation in early to mid-November.
The current parking spaces (including motorcycle parking) along Bancroft will no longer be available, and the sidewalk on the Boalt side of Bancroft will also be inaccessible. Some motorcycle parking is being relocated. When we know the location we'll update the building website.
