In 1993, World Cup Organizing Committee President Alan Rothenberg needed a business plan to launch an American professional soccer league. Two years earlier, he had worked at Latham & Watkins with a young associate named Mark Abbott. With one phone call and a summer leave of absence, Abbott would soon become Major League Soccer's first employee—and eventually league president.

"It was no easy task building a pro soccer league here," says Abbott, a 1989 Berkeley Law graduate, "not to mention the first U.S. large-scale start-up sports league since the 1940s. It takes time to develop fan allegiances and to gain traction with commercial ventures, but overcoming challenges makes this job rewarding."

Abbott played a key role in creating the league’s structure and negotiating with investors. Today, he oversees all business operations, supervising the broadcasting, legal and finance departments and MLS' ongoing expansion from 14 to 16 teams.
