Werner Wolfen '53
Citation Award recipient Werner Felix Wolfen '53 was born in Berlin and at age 8 came to America with his family as refugees from Nazi Germany. He earned a degree in business administration from UC Berkeley in 1950, and after graduating from Boalt Hall three years later, went to work for the 5-man law firm of Irell & Manella in Los Angeles to practice tax law. Over the next 46½ years, Werner helped build Irell into one of the premier law firms in California, rising to senior partner and concentrating on tax and entertainment law with a client roster that included A&M Records, Herb Alpert, Jerry Moss, and the Carpenters.
Since retiring from Irell & Manella in 1998, Werner has owned and managed Capri Investment Co., a venture capital investment firm. Werner and his wife, Mimi, also serve on the cabinet for the Campaign for Boalt Hall. The Wolfens have contributed generously to faculty endowments and law school programs. Their contributions to Boalt’s International Human Rights Law Clinic reflect a lifelong commitment to social justice. A gift in 2005 established the Werner and Mimi Wolfen Research Professorship, currently held by Professor Frank Zimring.
