Dear Friends,

We have comings and goings to announce this month. Jason Schultz is returning to the clinic he helped start as a student. And Louise Epstein is leaving us as assistant dean of advancement. Meanwhile, there are a ton of important events coming up, as well as opportunities to work with the Boalt community.

Assistant Dean Louise Epstein to Retire
Louise Epstein, Boalt Hall's assistant dean for advancement, is retiring after 13 years at the law school. Her last day at work will be March 6. Epstein has been involved with Boalt Hall alumni relations since 1994. Prior to becoming assistant dean for advancement, she served as director of alumni relations, associate director of development, and acting director of development and alumni relations. In recognition of her many contributions to Boalt Hall, a special gift opportunity has been established in her honor.  For more information, go here.

Schultz Returns to Samuelson Clinic as Associate Director

Whoever said you can't go home again may want to chat with Jason Schultz. Recently appointed associate director of Boalt Hall's Samuelson Law, Technology and Public Policy Clinic, Schultz '00 has come full circle back to the institution he helped create

Samuels-Young '90 is Attorney by Day, Acclaimed Novelist at Night
When Pamela Samuels-Young ’90 asked a couple of law school friends to read the manuscript of her first novel, she did not get the reaction she anticipated. "They either avoided me or changed the subject," Samuels-Young says with a laugh. "It forced me to face the reality that the book wasn’t nearly as good as I thought it was. That’s when I went back to the drawing board and began to really study the writing craft." Harlequin Books rewarded that effort by signing on to publish her legal thrillers.

Centers and Clinics Highlights

Partners in Leadership 2007-08 nears $1,000,000 in gifts
The Partners program challenges organizations with five or more Boalt graduates to achieve 100 percent giving among the alumni at the firm or company. To date this season, 58 firms/companies representing 1,200 alumni led by 100 captains have contributed almost $1 million to support students, programs and faculty at Boalt. There is still time to get involved. If you are one of five or more at your firm or organization - come join us, leverage your individual gifts and inspire others to support Boalt Hall. For more contacts and information, visit the Partners web page.

Alumni Notes

Have you moved to a new city or job? Do you have a baby on the way? Did you get a promotion? Keep your fellow alums up-to-date with your important life changes by submitting a Class Note. We'll publish your news on the web and/or the Transcript magazine. And if you don't have anything new to report, that's OK, too. You can still see what everyone else is up to here.

The Bar Association of San Francisco gave an award to Kathi Pugh '90 for her efforts organizing a conference on hiring and retaining lawyers with disabilities. Pugh, at Morrison & Foerster, LLP, shared the award with Betsy Johnsen , Law Offices of Betsy Johnsen. Their program was videotaped and will be distributed to firms in San Francisco and nationally.

Leading class action litigator Elizabeth Cabraser ’78, founding partner of Lieff Cabraser Heimann & Bernstein, has been named overall chair of the 2008 Class Reunion Campaign. Ms. Cabraser brings a distinguished record of community service and leadership to the law school’s key annual giving program, which raised more than $6 million last year. “Boalt means everything to me,” she said reflecting on her decision to accept the job and the work ahead. Reunion 2008 takes place during Alumni Weekend on September 20. Individual campaign committees are being organized for classes with graduation years that end in a 3 or 8. If you would like to participate, please contact Helaine Schweitzer, Director of Class Campaigns, at (510) 642-6937 or send an email to reunion@law.berkeley.edu.

Help recruit Boalt Hall students! Join your local Boalt community in welcoming admitted students to the Boalt Hall class of 2011.  Many of these prospective students are weighing competing offers from the nation's top law schools, and we hope you will attend events in your area to help explain what makes Boalt so special.  Along with a chance to meet eager new students and be an ambassador of your alma mater, you'll have an opportunity to connect with fellow graduates in your community.  Check out the schedule of upcoming alumni and admitted student receptions here.
