Robbins '72 Accepts Hewlett Challenge—Pledges $1 Million
Lance Robbins '72 achieved success in real estate by knowing when to jump at a unique opportunity. So when the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation issued its challenge to UC Berkeley to match major donations for endowed chairs, Robbins leaped at the chance to become the first to donate $1 million to help Boalt fund a new faculty chair in criminal justice.

What's in a Name? Boalt? Berkeley Law?

With UC Berkeley among the top universities and undoubtedly the top public university in the world, with every one of its graduate programs in the top 10 in the U.S. News & World Report rankings, the law school and the university benefit from sharing resources, academic reputation, and our name. To the world beyond Boalt, we are the law school at the University of California, Berkeley. Our driver's license and passport need to reflect this identity—and so the move to call ourselves "Berkeley Law" for short, or more fully the "University of California, Berkeley, School of Law."  Of course, among our family and friends, we'll always be Boalt.
