Boalt students' intellectual excellence as well as their varied interests and backgrounds are among the law school’s greatest strengths.
There are approximately 850 J.D. students at Boalt Hall, with some 7,000 applicants for an entering class of approximately 270. Many hold advanced degrees.
In addition Boalt enrolls approximately 100 students each year in its LL.M. and J.S.D. programs, mostly from Europe, Asia, South America and Africa. The school also annually enrolls approximately 10 students in its Ph.D. program in Jurisprudence and Social Policy.
The average age of entering students is 25, with a typical age range of 20 to 40. In recent years, more than 50 percent of the entering class has been women. For more than 30 years, students of color have made up approximately 33-35 percent of the student body. The law school community continues to strongly encourage students of all backgrounds to apply to Boalt Hall.
Along with their strong academic qualifications, Boalt students have diverse backgrounds in areas such as architecture, business, community organization, government, medicine and teaching. The students' wide array of interests and perspectives adds immeasurably to the intellectually stimulating environment at Boalt Hall.
