Boalt Hall offers an unparalleled legal education, and the intellectual excellence of its students as well as their varied interests and backgrounds are among the school's greatest strengths. The school selects students who will bring vision, commitment and integrity to their professional lives, and who will go on to serve as leaders in their fields.
Boalt Hall seeks to educate outstanding lawyers who will serve the legal needs of society. The J.D. program provides students from diverse backgrounds the opportunity to study at a leading law school. Entering classes include students from all geographic areas of the country and from abroad; students with advanced degrees, substantial work experience, a great array of life experiences and special achievements. The LL.M., J.S.D and JSP programs offer superb academic opportunities for students interested in legal scholarship, teaching or public service.
Because law school and legal practice success does not depend on ones field of study before law school, Boalt Hall does not require or even recommend a specific pre-law major. The law school seeks applicants with varied backgrounds and training, resulting in diversity that enhances and enriches the educational experience of all students. Boalt Hall seeks a student body with a broad set of interests, backgrounds, life experiences and perspectives.
Students who wish to prepare to study law, however, may take courses that:
- Develop written and oral communication skills;
- Teach analytical and problem-solving abilities;
- Provide broad exposure to the humanities and social sciences and examine the social context within which legal problems arise; and
- Develop a general understanding of economics because many legal issues relate to the economic functioning of society.
In selecting specific courses, consultation with an undergraduate advisor may be desirable.
Recently, Boalt Hall students' most common undergraduate majors have included biology, economics, English, history, political science and psychology; however, the student body represents a wide range of majors.
