Information for All Applicants

The decision to study law at Boalt Hall is an important one. Students who enter any of our programs make a major commitment and will grow and be challenged intellectually.

The pages in this section of the website describe resources available for prospective students to learn more about Boalt and the application process and requirements. There is also information for international and disabled applicants that includes resources available to help them through the application process.

Prospective students should familiarize themselves with the admissions policies and information. The website covers many of these details, but please contact the Admissions Office at 510-642-2274 with any questions. The following policies govern the admissions process:

Accuracy of Information
The submission of any false or misleading information of any kind in support of an application for admission to the School of Law at the University of California, Berkeley may result in the permanent cancellation or rescission of admission by the law school. It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that all information is accurate and complete.

Campus Safety
The university maintains a reference guide of safety information and procedures, annual campus crime statistics, and emergency/disaster preparedness information. To view the Safety Counts report, visit the campus website at http://police.berkeley.edu/. To request a copy of this report, call 510-643-6442, email ucpolice@uclink.berkeley.edu or write to:

Ethnicity Survey
The law school is required to provide reports to various federal and state agencies about the ethnic composition of the applicant population. Therefore the J.D. Program application form includes an optional question regarding an applicant's ethnic identity. The university treats such information as confidential and uses it only for statistical purposes. The information will not be used for purposes of determining admission to the law school, and it will not be a part of any applicant's admission file.

Information Practices Act
The State of California Information Practices Act of 1977 requires the university to inform applicants for admission who are asked to supply information about themselves that the principal purpose for requesting the information is to process the applications. Maintenance of this information is authorized by university policy.

Furnishing information that is not designated voluntary or optional is mandatory. Failure to provide such information will delay or may even prevent completion of the admissions process.

Information furnished may be used by various university departments for admissions and other student-related purposes, such as housing and financial aid. This information will be transmitted to the state and federal governments if required by law. Individuals have the right of access to this record as it pertains to themselves. The official responsible for maintaining this information is the dean of the UC Berkeley Graduate Division.

Nondiscrimination Statement
The University of California, in accordance with applicable federal and state law and university policy, prohibits discrimination, including harassment, on the basis of race, color, national origin, religion, sex, physical or mental disability, medical condition (cancer-related or genetic characteristics), ancestry, marital status, age, sexual orientation, citizenship or status as a covered veteran (special disabled veteran, Vietnam-era veteran or any other veteran who served on active duty during a campaign or expedition for which a campaign badge has been authorized). This nondiscrimination policy covers admission, access and treatment in university programs and activities.

Inquiries may be directed as follows:

  • age discrimination: Age Discrimination Act Coordinator Alan T. Kolling, 510-642-8471;
  • disability discrimination and access: ADA/504 Compliance Officer Ward Newmeyer, 510-643-5116 (voice or TTY/TDD);
  • sex discrimination and sexual harassment: Title IX Compliance Officer Nancy Chu, 510-643-7985; and
  • other inquiries: Academic Compliance Office, 510-642-2795.

Social Security Numbers
The university is required by federal law to report social security numbers and other pertinent information to the Internal Revenue Service pursuant to the reporting requirements imposed by the Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997. The university will also use applicants' social security numbers to verify their identity. Social security number disclosure is mandatory. This notification is provided as required by the Federal Privacy Act of 1974.

Student Records
Each student is entitled by law and university policy to examine and challenge most of the records maintained by the university on that student. These records are confidential, and in most circumstances may be released to third parties only with the prior consent of the student. Such matters are detailed in the Berkeley Campus Policy Governing Disclosure of Information from Student Records. For a copy, please write to:
