EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

The Executive Director serves as the primary manager of the Center for Public Policy and Law. In this capacity the Executive Director supervises and manages activities associated with reaching, serving, and engaging external constituencies through programs, events, products, and services. Constituencies include faculty, students, alumni, government, industry, as well as the general public. The Executive Director translates faculty needs and priorities into customized programs to create, enhance, and sustain relationships between the law school and its external constituencies.

Executive Director

Thelton E. Henderson Center for Social Justice

SUMMARY:  The Executive Director serves as the chief operating officer of the Thelton E. Henderson Center for Social Justice.  In this capacity the Executive Director is responsible for the implementation of policies set by the faculty Co-Directors, as well as the financial, program, and administrative management of the Center. Guidance and direction is provided by the faculty Co-Directors.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.

Administrative/Strategic:

  • Oversee all aspects of the Center’s day-to-day operations and develop, plan, and manage the Center’s public interest programs
  • Work closely with the faculty director and faculty executive committee in setting goals and policies, selecting and shaping the initiatives mounted by the Center
  • Link faculty strengths with emerging matters of policy import.
  • Interview, hire, and supervise staff and students employed by the Center
  • Plan, organize, and implement conferences, symposia, lectures, and other events sponsored by the Center
  • Arrange and facilitate fellowships and other research support awarded by the Center
  • Coordinate the involvement of Center-affiliated faculty in curricular planning
  • Oversee long-term research projects and ongoing initiatives mounted by the Center
  • Coordinate the HCSJ’s activities with student groups at Boalt Hall, other research centers at Boalt Hall and elsewhere on the Berkeley campus, and social justice groups outside U.C. Berkeley
  • Oversee, revise, and implement the Center’s budget.

Fundraising: Under the direction of and in close coordination with the Assistant Dean for Institutional Advancement and the Faculty Director, the Executive Director will spearhead fundraising for HCSJ (including grant applications and presentations to foundations, alumni groups, professional organizations, and other outside groups).  He/she will work one-on-one and with small-groups with potential donors to strategize and plan development activities.

Communication:  The Executive Director will be the Center’s representative to the Berkeley campus, the University of California, and outside groups, including media outlets and professional organizations and the legal community, on a regional, national, and international level.  He/she will have primary responsibility for publicizing and disseminating the work of the Center.  He/she will also work with other, appropriate personnel at Boalt Hall and U.C. Berkeley designing, preparing, and overseeing the production of Center publications, web pages, and publicity materials.

Career Development, Counseling, and Outreach: The Executive Director will serve on the Northern California Law School Consortium Project Board of Directors and collaborate with the Career Services Associate Director of Public Interest programs to plan programs and counsel students interested in public interest careers.  In addition, he/she will collaborate with the Director of Admissions to recruit prospective students interested in public interest careers to U.C. Berkeley School of Law.

Research:  Interest in, and the ability to, contribute to HCSJ’s research mission by participating in funded research projects and conducting research necessary to shape national symposia and scholarly lectures on cutting edge social justice issues. For example, he/she might oversee significant data collection projects on social justice issues, be the primary or co-author on reports describing and analyzing the data that would be of interest to policymakers and practitioners, and work with Center-affiliated faculty to enhance the accessibility of their scholarship. For large projects, the he/she might also hire and supervise contract researchers as well as manage students working on these projects.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

  • At least 8 years of experience working in a legal practice, academia, policy think tank, or foundation that has a significant interest in social justice.
  • Substantial substantive knowledge and experience in the field of social justice.
  • Advanced political and organizational acumen within a complex environment, with significant experience conducting and developing research strategies and programs within a complex unit or organization serving multiple constituencies.
  • Advanced knowledge of fundraising practices and substantial experience raising funds from high-level donors for new programs and initiatives.
  • Advanced management and supervisory skills.
  • Excellent organizational and prioritizing skills.
  • Advanced written and oral communication skills and the ability to produce professional documents that meet the highest standards for appearance, grammar, spelling, and clarity. 
  • Demonstrated ability to articulate the Center’s priorities, objectives and mission to volunteers, law firms, corporations, foundations, individual prospects, faculty, students, and senior campus officials.
  • Ability to perform with a minimum of day-to-day supervision, be self-motivated with demonstrated ability to take initiative to accomplish strategic goals, and demonstrate the highest ethical standards in all actions.
  • Demonstrate successful innovative problem-solving skills with ability to use diplomacy and judgment within a complex environment.
  • Advanced research and analytical skills with ability to use quantitative and qualitative assessments to draw conclusions.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills effective in working with a wide variety of constituencies, both inside and outside the University, including: donors, faculty, staff, students and volunteers.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to work independently, actively, and effectively while participating as an integral member of a team.
  • Significant experience in developing superior relationships with key stakeholders and the ability to successfully deal with confidential, complex situations involving coordination and consultation with high level constituents.
  • Advanced leadership experience and the ability to motivate individuals, encourage teamwork and cooperation, work collaboratively within large organizations, and provide clear direction to achieve exceptional results.
  • Computer proficiency using various software programs, including MS Office Suite, and the ability to learn new software programs quickly. 
  • Able to travel and attendance at evening and weekend events on occasion.
  • Ability to successfully complete a criminal background check.

Preferred:

  • Considerable writing experience and familiarity with the Bay Area legal community.

Jurisprudence and Social Policy Program Positions

The Jurisprudence and Social Policy Program in the School of Law at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applicants for two open-rank positions in the empirical analysis of law, legal institutions, or law and society.  Candidates should hold a Ph.D. in a social science discipline (including related interdisciplinary degrees), should have an excellent record of theoretically grounded empirical research, and should have expertise in research design, data collection, and data analysis using quantitative methods, qualitative methods, or both.  Applicants from all relevant social science and interdisciplinary trainings are encouraged to apply.  We hope to fill these positions with candidates whose research and teaching would complement and augment existing faculty strengths, particularly in the areas of sociology, political science, or law and society.
