Building-Related Policies

Fire Prevention Policies

What is the policy on posting papers on hallway walls or in display cases in hallways?

In general, combustible material should not be placed in hallways. However, the campus Fire Marshal has a policy that allows:
  • A bulletin board on only one side of a hallway, no larger than 4 feet by 4 feet.
  • The space between bulletin boards must be at least 75 feet.
  • Posted materials must be secured on all corners.
Glass enclosed bulletin boards or display cases are exempt. However, these display cases must not obstruct the hallway. In a narrow hallway, even a one-foot-deep display case may reduce the required exit width, thereby “obstructing” the hallway. If in doubt, contact EH&S for guidance.

How often should fire extinguishers be replaced or recharged?

The State Fire Marshal requires that all fire extinguishers in commercial occupancies are serviced annually, any time they have been used, or when the gauge reads “discharge.

On campus, fire extinguishers are regularly recharged by Physical Plant-Campus Services. If you notice fire extinguishers that appear to need servicing, please contact PP-CS at 642-1032.

What are some general safety provisions regarding extension cords?

Extension cords must not be used as a substitute for permanent wiring. During construction or special events, extension cords may be used for up to 90 days.

Cords are rated by the amount of power they are intended to carry. For example, an extension cord for a power tool that requires 10 amps should have more than a 10-amp capacity to safely carry this power without overheating and causing a fire.

Grounded, fused power strips may be used on a permanent basis as long as they are plugged into an outlet.
