Description: Lawrence M. Friedman is Marion Rice Kirkwood Professor of Law and Professor of History and Political Science at Stanford University. A founder of the field of law and society, Professor Friedman is "generally regarded as [James Willard] Hurst's successor as the greatest of American social-legal historians." A member of the American Academy of Arts and Science since 1977, holding honorary degrees from six universities at home and abroad, Friedman has been president of the Law and Society Association, the American Society for Legal History, and the Research Committee on the Sociology of Law of the International Sociological Association.
