The Cal Alumni Association (CAA) recently announced that Cloey Hewlett ’79 has won its annual Excellence in Service Award. The honor recognizes UC Berkeley alumni who have provided outstanding voluntary service to the CAA and/or the University.

A partner at the San Francisco office of Nossaman LLP, Hewlett will receive the award at the university’s annual Charter Gala celebration on April 9, 2011.

CAA alumni awards highlight “the dynamic excellence of a UC Berkeley education and the importance of service as a component of the UC Berkeley philosophy.” It is one of five annual awards the organization sponsors for distinguished alumni.

A loyal contributor to Berkeley Law, Hewlett hosts an annual reception at her home for the Berkeley Journal of African American Law & Policy. She has also served as a reunion class campaign volunteer, and helped plan the law school’s inaugural African-American Alumni Reunion.

Hewlett played a significant role in helping the CAA develop its equity scholarships. Established in 2008, these scholarships, which provide an economic incentive for California’s high-achieving, underrepresented minority students to attend UC Berkeley, award them $5,000 per academic year for up to four years to help close the financial gap.

A public policy attorney and national leader on diversity issues, Hewlett assists clients with state and federal policy issues across industries such as clean technology, renewable energy, water, and infrastructure. She also helps them obtain government funding and contracts.

Hewlett has significant state public-service experience in Sacramento, and at the county and city levels in Northern California. A former San Francisco County Assistant District Attorney and San Francisco City Police Commissioner, she has also been Director of Moral Character Determinations for the State Bar of California.
