Amazon and Others Slam Revised Google Books Deal

The Wall Street Journal

U.C. Berkeley Professor Pam Samuelson submitted an objection on behalf of a group of academic authors. “We do not believe that the settlement of a class action lawsuit is a proper way to make such a profound set of changes in rights of authors and publishers, in markets for books, and procedures for resolving disputes as the (settlement) would bring about,” the letter read.

The letters are the latest sign that the fight over the settlement is likely to continue. Even as the technology industry Wednesday turned its attention to Apple Inc.’s new iPad and digital book store, companies are still leery of Google’s ambitions in the space. But the search giant has long argued that the settlement only covers a small portion of the digital book market and there’s room for many players to offer digital book services in the future.
