  • Open enrollment policy:  students may self-enroll using the online registration procedures, subject to limits on each class size.   Open enrollment will cease once the maximum class size has been reached.   After completing the registration online, you will receive an email with payment instructions.  Course enrollment will be confirmed upon receipt of your payment.

  • Language requirements:  there are no prerequisite language requirements for enrollment in IELE courses.   Please be advised that all courses will be taught in English; therefore, it is recommended that participants have basic English language fluency.  (Translation is available for custom programs.)

  • Course Prerequisites:  there are no legal requisites for enrolling in IELE courses.  For advanced courses, it is recommended that participants have some background knowledge of law.

  • Course materials/Reading Assignments:  three weeks prior to the start of each course, written materials consisting of a study outline, course syllabus and bibliography of background reading will be electronically sent to each participant.  In addition, participants will be assigned nightly reading materials ranging from 45-75 minutes.

  • CLE Credit for IELE Courses: Berkeley Law School is a CLE provider. All IELE Certificate courses qualify for CLE credit under California and New York requirements. Please contact us regarding CLE credits for other jurisdictions.

  • Examination/Grades:  no examination or grades will be assigned for coursework.  For custom programs, a special course examination will be provided.

  • Certificates:  each participant who successfully completes each course will receive a Certificate of Legal Training in the specific course topic.

  • Nearby campus housing:  students are responsible for finding their own housing accommodations.  Some hotels, such as the Claremont Resort & Spa, offer a special discount rate for UC-Berkeley affiliated programs.  At the time of course registration, please check off the box indicating that you would like to receive information about nearby housing options, and a list of nearby hotels and available discounts will be sent to you by email.  The UC-Berkeley campus is also accessible from downtown San Francisco, about 50 minutes by subway train.

  • Visa invitation letter:  for participants from countries where a visa invitation letter is required for out-of-country travel, Berkeley Law will electronically send a Visa invitation letter within 45 days after enrollment.

  • Class location: most courses will be held on the UC-Berkeley main campus; however, due to space limitations associated with Berkeley Law’s new building construction, some classes may be offered in downtown San Francisco at UC-Berkeley’s extension campus.  

  • Group enrollment:  for groups of 6 and more students registering and enrolling at the same time, a group rate will be applied to the course tuition.   Please contact Helene Kim (hkim@law.berkeley.edu) to inquire about group rates.

  • Cancellations/refunds:  for Summer 2010 Open Enrollment courses, participants will be issued a partial refund of 75% if they cancel by May 1, 2010; after which no refunds will be issued.  In cases of personal or family emergency, participants will be allowed to reschedule their course elective at a future offering date.
