Foreign Language Exam
In conformity with Graduate Division rules, JSP students must demonstrate a reading knowledge of one foreign language by passing a translation exam administered by the program.
The language exams are given on a set date each semester. The exam consists of a short passage for translation into English, and students are permitted to use a dictionary. The exams are administered by the Graduate Assistant, who should be consulted over the exam schedule. This requirement needs to be satisfied before a student may proceed to the qualifying exams. Students are strongly advised to complete the requirement before completing their fields of specialization, ideally by the end of their second year in the program. (A JSP student for whom English is a second language is exempted from this requirement by petition to the Graduate Adviser.)
