2008-09 Annual Report
Dear Alumni and Friends,
Boalt Hall’s 2009 Annual Report of Philanthropy provides a special opportunity to thank our remarkable alumni and friends, who care deeply about this truly extraordinary place and are committed to keeping it world-class. Thank you.
This past year has shown us the strength of the Boalt Hall community in its spirit and determination. In uncertain economic times, more than 3,100 individuals and organizations rose to the occasion and provided support, including 631 donors who made their first gift to Boalt in fiscal year 2009.
Over the past five years, Boalt Hall has transformed itself, adapted to new realities and taken bold actions. I am heartened and optimistic as I share with you several of the law school’s successes over the past year.
- Fiscal year 2009 was the second best fundraising year to date in terms of total attainment, exceeding $14.5 million in support.
- The Campaign for Boalt Hall surpassed the halfway mark, totaling more than $70 million of its ambitious $125 million goal.
- As of the start of the new school year, Boalt Hall has hired 33 new stellar faculty members -- against some tough competition.
- In light of the economy, we expanded career services for students and alumni, increased financial aid and funding for summer fellowships, and upgraded our loan-forgiveness program.
- We added 12 new organizations to the Partners in Leadership program, including firms, corporations and nonprofits.
I am proud to work among such an accomplished and committed group of students, scholars, alumni, and friends. We continue to take on overwhelming challenges and deliver above and beyond expectation. With your continued support, we will remain focused on our most fundamental priority: to provide the best education of any law school. Period.
With sincere gratitude,
Christopher Edley, Jr.
The Honorable William H. Orrick, Jr. Distinguished Chair and Dean
