Congratulations to Berkeley Law's Sixth Annual State Bar Environmental Law Section Student Negotiation Competition!
The Berkeley Law team of Estie Manchik and Alexandra Barnhill (Team "L") won seventh-place standing in the recent ABA Student Environmental Law Negotiations Competition. They competed against 25 other teams to achieve this honor. Astie and Alexandra wanted everyone to know that "we really enjoyed our experience and we were glad we could be the first team to represent Berkeley Law in the competition. Thanks to each of you who helped us prepare and supported us."
The Environmental Law Program's students are already actively planning to participate in next year's competition, and we're sure to hear more good news in the future!
Congratulations, Estie and Alexandra!
Environmental Careers Directory, Receptions, and Panels
Each fall the Ecology Law Quarterly (ELQ) publishes the Environmental Careers Directory, a comprehensive guide containing employment information about a variety of private law firms, government agencies, and nonprofit environmental law organizations. ELQ and Berkeley Law's Office of Career Services sponsor two on-campus receptions during the fall for environmental employers to meet and recruit students. In addition, the Environmental Law Society (ELS) sponsors luncheons that bring current students, Berkeley Law alumni, and other practitioners to talk about their experiences working in the field of environmental law. For more information, visit the ELQ events page.
Environmental Law Summer Fellowships
ELQ has a long-standing tradition of awarding summer fellowships to first- and second-year students. The fellowships are awarded to students who plan to work on an environmentally oriented public interest project. Normally summer fellows work at public interest organizations, but ELQ has also occasionally funded independent projects. When Professor Joseph Sax retired, ELQ proudly named one of the fellowships after him. ELQ is also pleased to have established the Barry S. Sandals Memorial Summer Fellowship. For the foreseeable future, ELQ will be able to award at least three fellowships each summer.
Applications for summer fellowships are due in early April. The application process for all of the Berkeley Law summer fellowships—the Dean's, BLF, ELQ, and others—is streamlined into one joint application. Information about the criteria and procedures will be made available in early spring.
Ellis J. Harmon Environmental Law Writing Award
The Harmon Prize competition is open to any currently enrolled student at Berkeley Law, including those in the LL.M. and JSP programs. To compete, students must submit an original, unpublished research paper suitable for publication in the ELQ on an environmental law and policy topic. The paper must be entirely the student's work and not edited by law journal editors or faculty.
A team of Berkeley Law's environmental faculty members judges the submissions, and the awards are presented at the annual ELQ banquet. The author of the award-winning paper receives a cash prize, a small gift and special recognition at graduation.
Alvin and Sadie Landis Prizes in Water Law and in Local Government Law
The Landis Prizes in Water Law and in Local Government Law are awarded annually for the best research paper written by a Berkeley Law student in each area. The competitions are open to any currently enrolled Berkeley Law student, including those in the LL.M. and JSP programs. To compete, students must submit an original, unpublished research paper about a topic in either water or local government law. The paper must be entirely the student's work and not edited by law journal editors or faculty.

Ecology Law Quarterly Banquet
ELQ holds its annual banquet in late spring. The banquet is an opportunity for all members of Berkeley Law's environmental community to get together with practicing environmental lawyers. At the banquet a member of the practicing community is honored with the Environmental Law Program's Environmental Leadership Award, and the recipients of the Harmon Environmental Law Writing Award, the Landis Prizes in Water Law and in Local Government Law, and the Environmental Law Summer Fellowships are announced. For more information about the banquet, visit the ELQ website.
In the late fall, ELQ sponsors a 10K race followed by a picnic. The event helps raise funds for the Environmental Law Summer Fellowships. The entire Berkeley Law community is invited to participate. More information about the race is available on the ELQ website.
ELQ and the ELS host an annual autumn trip to Yosemite National Park. All Berkeley Law students are welcome to participate in this camping trip. For more information, visit the ELQ website.
