Boalt Hall Scholarships

The Boalt Hall Financial Aid Office administers several supplemental scholarships for continuing students.

Most are awarded based on the student's financial need as reflected on the FAFSA and Need Access forms, as well as on particular criteria for each scholarship.

 

Manatt, Phelps & Phillips Diversity Scholarship

This renewable (second & third year) $5,000 award is given to a rising 2L student who demonstrates excellent academic standing and financial need. Preference will be given to underrepresented minority students. The law firm may require an interview and writing sample.

Orrick Scholarship

This $10,000 award is for a current 1L who is a parent or family caregiver (e.g. someone caring for and financially responsible for siblings, an aging parent, etc.) who demonstrates financial need. The renewable fellowship will be provided during the recipient’s second and third years at Boalt Hall.

Gray, Cary, Ames & Frye Scholarship

The Gray, Cary, Ames & Frye Scholarship is awarded to a third-year student who is a San Diego resident and who demonstrates financial need, academic excellence, and work on law review.

Michael J. Halloran Scholarship

The Michael J. Halloran Scholarship is awarded to a second- or third-year law student who plans to specialize in corporate, securities and/or banking law and intends to take courses in one or more of these areas.

Alexander Marsden "Captain" Kidd Scholarship

The Alexander Marsden "Captain" Kidd Scholarship is awarded to a second- or third-year student who has interest or experience in a career in education or education law and demonstrates financial need.

Homer Mason Scholarship

The Homer Mason Scholarship is awarded to a third-year law student with expressed interest in people of Third World backgrounds and/or poor and underrepresented in our society.

The Judge Edward Dean Price Memorial Scholarship

The Judge Edward Dean Price Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a second or third-year law student who has a connection to California’s Central Valley. This award is given to help toward the purchase of his or her law books.

Elizabeth and Charles Tigar Scholarship

The Elizabeth and Charles Tigar Scholarship is awarded to a third-year student who has demonstrated interest in public interest law, defined as the promotion of human rights, pacific settlement of international disputes, health care law, and the promotion of the rights of women, workers, the disabled, children, and racial, ethnic, and national minorities.

Victor Van Bourg Scholarship

The Victor Van Bourg Scholarship is awarded to a third-year student who demonstrates financial need and a commitment to practicing labor law on behalf of unions and working people. Preference will be given to a student from an economically disadvantaged background and who is, or has been, a labor union member.

Sid Wolinsky & David Baum Public Interest Practice Scholarship

The Sid Wolinsky & David Baum Public Interest Practice Scholarship is awarded to a disabled (as defined by federal statutes) third-year student who demonstrates an interest in pursuing a public interest career.

Boalt Hall Grants

Boalt Hall Grants are need-based and cover a portion of the fees. They are funded by the Professional Degree Fee and endowed funds. Eligibility is determined each year.

 

Boalt Hall Fellowships

Boalt Hall Fellowships are fund by UC Berkeley's Graduate Division and awarded on the basis of merit to cover fees. Boalt Hall Fellowships are awarded to first-year students and are renewable.

 

Graduate Diversity Program Awards

The Graduate Diversity Program Awards are need-based. The program is funded by the Graduate Division to assist qualified students with enrolling in graduate and professional degree programs on the Berkeley campus. Typical awards cover tuition and fees, and provide entering students a stipend for one year. The fee portion is renewable. Recipients are identified on the basis of merit, financial need, loan indebtedness and socioeconomic factors, including family history.
