Street Violence
BCCJ has partnered with the cities of San Francisco and Oakland to implement a street violence reduction inititative in each city. The initiative is supported by the Evelyn and Walter Haas, Jr. Fund in San Francisco and the Wachovia Foundation in Oakland. The initiative, also known as the call-in strategy, strives to reduce street violence in high-crime neighborhoods by focusing on probationers most at-risk of being involved in violence. These probationers hear a direct message from community and law enforcement partners that the violence must stop; that the community partners, with the support of law enforcement, are available to provide services to those choosing to turn away from a violent lifestyle; and that law enforcement, with the full support of the community, will remove those who choose to continue to act violently from the community. BCCJ provides in-depth technical support to law enforcement and community partners in both cities.
