Using a Place-Based Technology to Address Shootings in East Palo Alto

The East Palo Alto Police Department has been awarded a grant by the U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance to assess the use of their gunshot location detection system, which is a city-wide system of acoustic sensors that detects and locates gunshots and translates that information to police dispatchers in real time.  The Warren Institute is working with EPA PD to assess how this technology, which has been operational for two and a half years, is being used above a beyond a rapid response tool to include investigation, problem solving, and crime prevention efforts.
