Using Public Health Strategies to Reduce Violence in Crime Hot Spots in East Palo Alto

The East Palo Alto Police Department (EPA PD) has been awarded a grant by The California Endowment to partner with public health agencies and community-based organizations to reduce crime and violence in high-crime neighborhoods while improving the health of those communities.  The Chief Justice Earl Warren Institute on Law and Social Policy at the University of California, Berkeley School of Law has been contracted by EPA PD to provide technical assistance and analytical support that includes designing and analyzing a survey about residents’ perceptions of fear and violence, levels of physical activity and healthy behavior, and opinions about the local police; assisting with documentation and monitoring of project implementation activities; working with the project partners to identify geographic areas with high levels of shootings; and conducting crime analysis in targeted geographic areas.
