Fellowships Work Study

Work Study

With the federal work-study program, eligible Boalt Hall students have an opportunity to receive a combination of federal, employer and Boalt Hall Summer Fellowship funds for their summer public interest/public sector work. To determine if you are work-study eligible, contact the Boalt Hall Financial Aid Office (510-642-1563; financial-aid@law.berkeley.edu).

If a student draws on work-study funding plus summer fellowship funding during the same summer, the normal arrangement will be this: the employer will be expected to provide $2000, $2000 in work-study funds will be used, and $2000 in Boalt Hall Summer Fellowship funds will be provided, for a total of $6000. (As explained in the Boalt Hall Summer Fellowship Guidelines, this arrangement allows the student to “bank” $2000 of unused Boalt Hall Summer Fellowship funds for a second summer.) This greater total support is meant both to encourage the use of work-study funding and to acknowledge that there may be some negative consequences to using work-study funding. (Summer work-study earnings decrease the amount of a student's financial aid -generally private loan- eligibility during the following school year.) Variations in this funding arrangement may be approved by the Fellowship Committee for good cause.
