Student Fellowships

The Human Rights Center at the UC Berkeley School of Law works with University of California campuses to provide fellowships for students wishing to contribute their energy and expertise to human rights organizations worldwide.

The student fellowships provide opportunities for meaningful human rights work domestically and internationally. Each participating University of California campus selects and funds their own fellow or fellows through the program administered by the Human Rights Center at UC Berkeley. In 2014, fellows came from UC Berkeley, UC San Francisco, UC Davis, UC Santa Cruz, UC Irvine, UC San Diego, and UCLA and worked in more than 10 countries. Please contact UC Berkeley's Fellowship Coordinator Julie Lagarde at jlagarde@berkeley.edu with questions about UC Berkeley's application process or contacts at other UC campuses. UC Berkeley's deadline for fellowship applications is Friday, February 20, 2015.

Student fellows have come from a wide range of disciplines, including anthropology, political science, law, environmental science, public policy, public health, and medicine. Some fellows have learned how to design and implement grassroots advocacy campaigns on behalf of the landless, poor, or urban workers in Asia, Africa, Central America, and the United States. Others have helped draft legal briefs on behalf of political asylum seekers in the United States, worked with the International Criminal Tribunals for the former Yugoslavia and Rwanda, campaigned for adequate medical care for AIDS victims in Russia, or worked with organizations fighting for the rights of farmers displaced by the construction of large dams in India.
